A first for us...

Marissa had our biggest accident so far on Tuesday. She was playing in the lot in front of the house and she fell down. Kids always fall down so it's not like it was a big deal but this time she caught herself on a jagged rock with her left hand. She came into the house crying and I thought her nail had been torn off (a story for another time). I saw the blood collecting in her hand so I knew it was not the nail. We washed it in the kitchen sink and it actually stopped bleeding rather quickly. I could tell it wasn't deep but it was a good cut. Kevin washed it more when he came home for lunch and then I took her to the clinic on campus to get it cleaned out even better. I didn't want to leave anything in there. I told the nurse we just needed it cleaned out so she took a look at it. She had the doctor take a look at it. They decided it needed stitched. Luckily Kevin came by to see how we were doing and was able to take the four other kids out while it happened. The doctor needed to "explore" in the cut to make sure there was no debris and Marissa cried. The doctor put numbing stuff in her hand and Marissa screamed. The numbing stuff must not have worked at all because Marissa continued to cry and howl the entire time. I kept her from looking at it, most of the time, and I talked to her and tried to get her to think about something else. She stopped crying when the doctor said they were done and that was that.

She has been great and only complained about pain that night. She still wants to go outside and play but I keep telling her that we really need to be careful so she usually stays inside. I have let her go to the neighbors house - 3 girls live there and they have played with the kids each afternoon this past week. Having never had to deal with this kind of a thing I'm not sure how careful we really need to be. I would hate for her to fall and catch her self again and tear the wound open. We go back to the clinic on Tuesday for the stitches to come out and we'll see how it is doing.

Good luck with the stitches.

Gosh if I had been there Roger/Gaffa I would have used crazy glue. Can't get around without that. I use it for all my cuts.
