Then you have to bite it so that you split the outer covering.
Then you peel the outer covering off to expose the soft, juicy fruit inside.
Then you drop it in the sand because it's a little bit slippery.
Compare the sand covered canup to your sand covered shirt. Which one is worse?
Pop it in your mouth because it doesn't really matter - you've eaten sand before and the canup is worth it. Of course, your mother will take the sand covered canup away and give you a fresh one that she has popped from the covering so that you don't have to eat the sand.
And moments later you will pop the canup out of your mouth to check on it and it will become sand covered again. That's just the way it goes.
There is a pit in the middle of the squishy, juicy pulp. Normally you would just chew and suck the pulp off and spit out the pit. Kemiah likes to bite it and chew on the pit a bit so that it takes a bit of effort to get all the pieces out of her mouth before she can suck on another canup. She really does like them, as do all the kids. Maybe I should eat more than just a few to see if I might like them too. I'll get back to you.
