Rain, rain, go away!

This is the dry season (Have I mentioned that before?) and yet we woke up this morning to a constant rain. It wasn't dumping but it was raining and the sky was completely gray every where I looked so it seemed as if it might rain all day. We also woke up to no electricity so that was interesting. As the morning went on and the rain continued I decided we would have to cancel our trip to Cabrits for our Thursday activity. I would have gone if the rain had stopped, even though the forest would have been wet and probably a bit muddy, but there was no way I was going to go hiking in the rain. I started to call our friends - Tamara was first. I told her I would have a movie at my house if I had power. She said, "I just got mine back." I flipped a light switch and, sure enough, it came on. So "Morning Movie" was a go. I called our other friends and invited them to come for the movie and then I had to set it up. No big deal, I've gotten the hang of it. So we enjoyed a rainy day inside watching the Disney movie Meet the Robinson's. We've seen it before, but only once, so the kids enjoyed watching it again. We even had a treat from Tamara - she brought popcorn! Such a deal!

After the movie, we had lunch and then walked our friends home. They live by the Annex so we took our empty water jugs to fill them up. I filled them and the kids climbed in the guava tree. They say they like guavas but halfway through they are usually tired of them. I can't get past the smell or all the little seeds so I won't eat them. Maybe I could try juicing them?

I had a thought today. I need to be more spontaneous (or clever) while we are out and about, or just sitting at home. So maybe spontaneous isn't the word to use because it would be half way planned. Anyway, I should have game ideas in my head, at the ready, so that when we are out and about I can give the kids a game to play. Something simple like tag or a race or something like that to keep them active. Sometimes they play inside all day so I'm sure they need more activity. Again, I don't want to get crazy elaborate and need a bunch of props but just fun things for them to do. Any ideas?

Here's a great one my kids at My elementary school loved. Its called freeze dance. You play music and then pause it every once in a while and whoever keeps dancing is out until the next pause. I like to let the kids pause the music and be the judge too. They love being in charge.

Oh and then I remembered another. I love playing with your kids. They are such the best! So while you are walking you could have scavenger hunts and give them a few things to look for and see who has the most when you reach your destination.

I spy with my little eye....... such a classic traveling game!!

Megdalynn used to always have fun songs to sing with her kids as they walked along, but I only know one or two (and trust me, you don't want me to sing them to you).

I'll have to agree with Tamara that freeze dance is awesome! Something similar is to have one child hold a maraca and dance while ever one else holds still. The child holding the maraca dances for a short time, passes it on to another child, and then freezes as next child has their turn in the spot light.

Tunnel tag was always a favorite of mine, sardines, simon says, What Time is it Mr. Wolf? (the kids at the day school could play this for hours on end), hhmmm..... I'll keep thinking and get back to you!
