Writing skills

How important is writing your letters? Is there is certain way that is right or wrong? I have noticed that my kids write some of their letters differently than I do. They are correct when they are done but the way they write is weird. I figure there is more than one way to skin a cat but will they be made fun of by other people? Nope, when would that ever happen? Maybe when they are adults and some one watches them write (like when?), they might say, "You write your g different than I do." And that will be the end of it because they will be adults and we don't make fun of other people for how they write their letters. Besides, how often do you actually watch someone write? I remember watching my friend, LeighAnne, write while we were in college and I noticed she went the opposite direction than I did when she would write her o's but so what? I just wonder if I should correct them now so that they have a different habit pattern. But if it's not a big deal then I'll just enjoy watching my kids write in their own ways.

Brendan is just in preschool so take that for what it's worth. he was writing his letters correctly and they were beautiful right when he began learning to write his alphabet. Well, now that he's been doing it for a while, I've noticed that he's writing them the "wrong" way. I asked his teacher about it and she said they grow out of it and it's not a big deal anyway. When the letter is done, it is beautiful. No big deal! Enjoy the fact that they enjoy writing right now! (Notice homonyms in there? ha, ha ha) I think they're just fine!

I say let them write the way that feels natural to them as long as they produce something legible. :) Seriously, you should see the way I tie my shoes--I'll show you next time I see you.
