Kemiah has been stuck in the house since we got here. I don't really have any shoes for her and so I won't let her just walk around the yard. I'm a little afraid of what might be in the grass waiting to eat my little girls feet or I fear that she might find that one pile of goat poop. The other day, however, I decided to see if she could walk about with Xiomara's sandals on and I gave Xiomara the next size up, which happens to be an extra pair that no one is using. They were a little big on Kemiah (and the new ones are big on Xiomara but she has more experience walking in shoes so it wasn't that big of a deal). She was so excited to be outside with the rest of us. We were out in the backyard collecting dirt for Marissa's beans (another post) but when I turned around Kemiah was gone. I knew she couldn't get too far so I went to the side of the house. Sure enough, she was making her way to the stairs at the side door. I helped her up and then I helped her down. She was merely checking things out. We went back to the backyard and the next thing I know she's heading back to the front again. This time I just followed her. She stopped at the stairs but realized she had already explored there so she went on. She paused for a moment as she came to the front sidewalk, turned and waved at our neighbor, Denis, and then kept right on going down the walkway. I sent Marissa up to walk with her and she just kept on going.
I tried to turn her around as she got to the bridge that goes to the street but she wanted nothing to do with that. I have no idea where she would have gone if I had just let her go. I wonder if she would have gone right, the way we always go to head to the pool or campus or the store or playgroup. Maybe she would have gone straight across the road, which is the way we go to Church. I guess she could have turned left as well, which is the way to the coast where we watch the sunset some times. She was just so excited to be going somewhere on her own two feet. Talk about independence....
