On my way home from the gym I was able to watch a momma cow clean her baby's face. I stopped and watched and she just kept right on cleaning. When she finished they both looked at me as if to say, "What are you looking at?" I just smiled and sort of held out my hand. The calf actually took a few steps toward me. I so badly wanted to reach out and pet it, but I stood very still so I wouldn't spook either of them. The calf actually sniffed my legs and then my hand. The momma moved closer too so that spooked me a bit. She's a little larger and I'm really not sure what she would do, especially since it was her baby. The baby sniffed me a couple more times and then went back to its mother so I waved and walked away. They stood together in the middle of the street for a while. I saw another girl come down the road who was a little more cautious and didn't want anything to do with the cow. She actually waited until the mother moved to the other side of the road before she continued down the street. She did have a puppy so that might have made her be more careful. Not like I was reckless. Just curious. It was really a neat thing to me - it's the closest I've ever come to a cow. And I have to say it's not what I would have thought I would see so much of on the island. Maybe when it's time for us to leave I won't think so much of it. Or maybe it will be the biggest thing I'll miss. Sort of like the moose from Alaska.
Last night on our walk home from the beach party/pool the kids were so excited to see the bats flying around the street lights. They were counting how many they saw. Of course, most of the time it was the same bat flying back and forth but they had fun. I love to watch for them too. I don't like them chirping in my ceiling but I guess you have to take the bad with the good. Now if only we could get a better look at some of the parrots on the island...
