How long will we be here?

I have had several people ask me about the length of our stay on the island, so I thought I'd just write a post about it and see if that clears things up a bit. We have 4 semesters of academics so that keeps us here through December of this year (2009). Then there is a 5th semester which is an introduction to clinical rotations (as I understand it). It is about 3 1/2 months long (I think). This semester can be done in one of three places: Miami, FL; Michigan; or Roseau, Dominica. We would like to do it here so that we don't have to move for such a short time and then have to move again for the start of rotations. We just found out that if we want to stay for 5th then we would have to stay for 6th as well - Kevin would do his pediatric and OB/GYN rotations at the hospital in Roseau. So, I think we'll be staying for 6th as well which means we won't be returning to the U.S. until near the end of the summer of 2010. The main pro. to staying here through 6th is that Kevin will be able to start rotations without having the results from his STEP test. If we went to Florida or Michigan for 5th semester, he would have a month after to study for the STEP, take the STEP, then wait for the results before he could apply for rotations. Then we'd find out where we would be doing rotations and we'd move. So that makes for some down time of him not getting anything done. So, if we are here for 6th, then he starts his rotations, takes the STEP, continues peds and OB/GYN, gets the results, applies and finishes his first two rotations so that should put us ahead of the game. If any of that made sense to you then YOU are ahead of the game. Any questions?

Oh and he wants to be a family practice doctor in a small town making house calls.

No questions on all of that...Sounds like a great plan. What kind of a medical doctor is he going to school for?

That sounds great! I'm with you on the moving thing. I want to do as little of that as possible in my lifetime. It is always hard on the kids. (Parents too we just try to hide it.)
