Around Portsmouth

I took my kids to the other side of Portsmouth so that I could do my visiting teaching. I took my camera, of course, and just got some pictures of things around town. Not really sure why because it's not like we walk by these places all the time and they don't mean a whole lot to me but just more of Dominica. And as my time on the island draws near the end I find myself wanting to take pictures of anything and everything so that I can remember it all.

Here's a gathering of fishermen just bringing in their catch and getting ready to sell it on the side of the road.

Here's one of the elementary schools in the area. There are no inside hallways so all the classroom doors lead outside.

Not really sure what this is, maybe a barn turned into a house, but I thought the bell was neat.

Here are some simple homes. They are not finished like in the states. When you go inside the floor is wood and you can see the studs. They just build them on stilts and keep it simple.

Here's the fancy cemetery. Most of them have the flower beds to make them pretty but I'm not sure very many of them are taken care of any more.

I stopped this local so I could take a picture of her carrying this bucket on her head. I saw a lady once with a large laundry basket on her head and she was walking into the woods to our swimming hole at the river to wash her clothes.

This is a cement house with lots of decorations - the railing pillars are sticking out on their archway and there are tons of shells stuck every where. Interesting.

I'm not sure why I didn't turn the camera to get the house and the kids but you can see my shadow so you know I was there too!

On our way home we heard the blowing of the shell to let everyone know they had fresh fish. I crossed the street and asked the kids if I could take his picture blowing the shell. Some one behind him said, "Sure but you'll have to pay for it." Luckily the man cutting the fish said I could take the picture, so I did and I didn't pay for it.

One of the tall mountains on the this end of the island.

Here's a guava in a tree. Just thought it looked neat.

Here are my kids in a guava tree, hunting for the fruit they may or may not eat. Don't worry, Kemiah and Xiomara will eat it.

Oh look, here she is eating it. She used to eat them really well but now she has taken to making a mess so I actually have to pay attention to her when she is eating one.
