I just realized that I never made a post about kite flying - but I meant to way back in October. So, when I mentioned it in the Thanksgiving post I looked back and nothing was there. Anyway, I guess I could talk about it now.
Ben got a kite for his birthday from a friend of ours. We liked it so much that we got a kite for Marissa for her birthday and we brought one for Emily because her birthday was a few days after we got here.
The first time we tried to fly kites it wasn't windy enough so we couldn't get them up - although I think a couple local kids did but they ran more than we did.
The next time we went we were more successful. The only issue was that the local kids came out again and my kids hardly had a chance to fly their kites at all. Not wanting to be rude I didn't do much about it. The kids seemed to enjoy watching the kites fly, even if they weren't the ones flying them.
The next time I wasn't as patient with the locals because I wanted my kids to be able to actually know what it's like to fly a kite and not just watch it. I was still nice about it but told the locals to let my kids have a turn. Ben and Emily can get their kites up pretty easily but we are still having trouble with Marissa's. It's a butterfly and for some reason it just won't stay up. I think I'll make Kevin come fly kites with us during the break and see if he can figure out what's happening and what we need to do to make it fly. (He is an aeronautical engineer after all.)
I have to admit that I think it is really fun to see the kites flying in the air. There's really not much to it once they are up so maybe that's why my kids don't care if the other kids take the kites away. Besides, our neighbor, Curvin, showed up and the kids would rather hang out with him then stand around holding a string that is being pulled by the wind. But it is fun to watch the long tails and see the kite dance with the wind. Maybe we needed to get trick kites so that we could do something while they fly - or that might be a little above our heads and we'll wait a while longer for those type of kites.
