Who likes laundry?

I have always done my own laundry. Well, that's not even true. While in Alaska, Kevin started doing it every Saturday with the kids. So I didn't even have to do it - although I did help them with the sorting part. We had a washer and drier that we bought way back in Mississippi when we were first married. Now, on the island, most American students have to send their laundry out to be washed by someone else. And sometimes, they don't get all their stuff back. We asked our landlord to get us a washer so that we could do our own. We even switched to cloth diapers on Kemiah because we could wash our own stuff. That hasn't stuck - at the suggestion of Kevin I went back to disposable. Anyway, the washing has gone okay. There are a couple things you have to keep in mind:
  • I don't have a drier so I have to make sure it's a nice, sunny day so the clothes will dry before night time.
  • Even though it starts out sunny it can rain at anytime so it's always a guess.
  • Do not wash your clothes if it has been raining because the water turns dirty when there is lots of rain - in the mountains, not necessarily where you are.
  • You must do loads on different days because I don't have enough line or clips for more than one load.
  • I have to hang my unmentionables inside because I don't like the idea of the neighbors seeing my underwear.
  • Unfortunately my neighbors like to burn stuff so as I hung the clothes yesterday his smoldering pile made my clothes smell like we had been around a campfire. (They are still out on the line so I hope the smoke smell will be gone.)
  • I'm sure I have more issues but that's all I'll share today.

Oh, and did I mention it's out on the porch? It was supposed to drain down a pipe and go out to a ditch but the pipe is too small and a lot of the water would end up on the porch so we set it up so that it drains under the porch. It works out just fine really.

And did I mention that my oven is outside too? We moved it out there because it added so much heat to an already hot house that we decided we could do our cooking outside. It's on a propane gas tank so the tank is behind the oven and we just have to make sure to get a new tank when the other one runs out of gas - and hopefully it's not in the middle of baking bread or something. I'm saving cooking in the Caribbean for another post.
