I just went outside to save my children from certain pain. They are out in the front lot playing on and around the tire swing I put up for them. I noticed that Marissa was holding the top of a broken bottle. I think she was digging with it. I have cleaned it up several times but because it is an empty lot and has collected trash for who knows how long the pieces of broken glass keep surfacing while they play. I just took two big handfuls of glass pieces to the trash can. The area looks clean for now but I'm sure we'll find more. The kids were even helping me, "Here, Mom, more glass." At least they will not be litter bugs.
It amazes me how "trashy" this "natural island" is as we walk down the sidewalk. I guess when they talk about the nature side they are talking about inland where people don't really live. But in the city, they are like everywhere else - litter all over on the side of the road. If I could control myself and take bags for all the kids as we went to the pool then we could really clean up. The problem is that once I start I can't stop and we would never make it to the pool. Oh well. Maybe that can be our activity one day instead of going to the pool. That sounds great: me and 5 little kids walking along the busy road without sidewalks picking up trash. I'll see about that.
